I have always been interested in visual art. As well as writing numerous ekphrastic poems inspired by art, I have also been developing my own creative work across different media.
‘Fragments of Us’ – A Poetry Film (commissioned by SHAPE Arts – Adam Reynolds Award)
This short poetry-film was commissioned by SHAPE Arts, as part of my ongoing meta-ekphrastic work which initially began with the curation of an interactive poetry display at National Museum Wales (for my PhD). The film was launched at an event in Cardiff on 30th October, and has now been published online.
‘Poem Under Construction’ 1st March to 8th May 2025
Featuring as part of this year’s Hadau Exhibition at The West Wall Gallery, Urban Crofters, my ‘Poem-Under-Construction’ consists of a collaged empty crate, into which viewers were invited to place words, drawings and ideas. I constructed a collage-poem from these contributions. 
What Are You Looking For? – 1st October to 30th November 2023
This interactive display of poetry-objects took place at the West Wall Gallery, Urban Crofters. It invited viewers to add their own creative response to the gallery wall.
In So Many Words – 6th September to 6th November 2022
As part of my PhD research, my interactive poetry display at Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales invited visitors to respond to artwork through the medium of poetry.

Crossing Points – Autumn 2018
In 2018 I was commissioned to produce an exhibition of photographs and poems – Crossing Points – by the madeinroath community arts festival, exploring ideas of belonging, connection and dislocation within a shared urban environment.

‘Crossing Points’ explores how poetry can exist beyond both page and performance and instead intervene in its surroundings. This works particularly well as the relationship between the photographs and poems are as symbiotic as they get… responding to each other in real time. The poems are realistic windows into the community… Carney masters the art of contrast, much like the photos themselves…

Explore Collective: Freedom to Create – March to May 2024
This exhibition took place at the Wales Millennium Centre as a celebration of a two year ‘Connect & Flourish’ project funded by Arts Council Wales. The project was based in two locations: with ACE at The Dusty Forge in Cardiff, and Valleys Kids in Rhondda Cynon Taff, and we also worked with Disability Arts Cymru. My contribution to the exhibition included three collage pieces and a collage poem.
Encountering Rome – February 2023
I created a poetry performance (a collaborative/collage poem) and an interactive collage as part of a student exhibition ‘Encountering Rome’, at the British School in Rome, funded by the SWWDTP. The poem responds to Rome and it’s multilayered history, incorporating words and phrases suggested by fellow artists. You can listen to the poem here: Rome: A Collaborative Collage Poem (4 minutes)
